Apps That Worked for Me in Malaysia
While traveling around Malaysia, several apps surprised me with their usefulness. They helped me at every stage of my solo trip.

1.Google Maps
Google Maps shows all available transport options in Malaysia, including metro lines, trains, and bus connections, while also displaying real time arrival and departure times, which makes planning journeys much easier. In practice, it worked better than dedicated local apps such as KL Metro or Rapidly, mainly because it is intuitive, reliable, and already familiar to most travelers, so for me it was the most convenient solution for using public transport in Malaysia. Additionally, it is an excellent tool for finding nearby restaurants, bars, and attractions, supported by trustworthy user reviews that help with quick and informed decisions on the go.

2.Grab
Grab is the Southeast Asian equivalent of Uber in Europe and the United States, and it is a very convenient option when you need to get somewhere quickly or when public transport does not reach your destination. The app offers live route tracking, which makes it easier to stay in control of the ride and feel more comfortable during the journey. Additionally, prices are very affordable, which is why Grab worked extremely well for getting around Malaysia. It also allows you to order food, which is especially useful if you prefer to stay in your hotel after a long day of exploring.

3.redBus
It offers a wide selection of routes from many operators in Malaysia and beyond, while remaining intuitive and easy to use. The app allows you to purchase bus tickets quickly with online payment, and after the purchase, you can download the ticket to your phone for offline access. Thanks to this, there is no need to check offers directly with individual operators, because one app is enough to plan multiple journeys efficiently.

4.Transtar Travel
The app supports services operated between Singapore and major cities in Malaysia, such as Kuala Lumpur and Malacca. The frequency of departures is high, although the route network itself is limited. As a result, it serves as a modest alternative to redBus when planning bus journeys, especially on popular cross border routes.
5.GetYourGuide
This app offers organized tours, private experiences, and tickets to various attractions across Malaysia, making sightseeing much easier and more efficient. Thanks to mobile tickets, you can skip queues at many places, which saves time while traveling. The app is user friendly and also allows you to browse offers by map or by category, so finding suitable activities is straightforward. Additionally, you can create lists of favorite attractions, which helps with trip planning. An important advantage is access to customer support and quick assistance if any issues arise during your booking or experience.
6.Agoda
Agoda allows you to book hotels, hostels, apartments, and guesthouses, while offering a very large accommodation database and often more competitive prices compared to Booking.com. Although Agoda belongs to the same group as Booking.com, it operates as an independent platform, and therefore the offers and prices may differ. Additionally, the app provides clear filters by price, location, ratings, and amenities, which makes searching easier, and at the same time allows you to complete reservations directly within the app without unnecessary steps.
7.Airalo
Airalo is one of the first apps and mobile operators offering global mobile internet. The service works in more than 200 countries and locations, including Malaysia, so it is suitable for long distance travel. The app is intuitive, and at the same time it allows fast payments as well as easy eSIM installation without a physical SIM card. I have been using it for many years, and therefore it also worked reliably during my stay in Malaysia. However, there is one clear downside, because Airalo does not provide a phone number, and as a result, it does not allow voice calls.
Transport and Getting Around in Malaysia
- KTM – Malaysian National Railway Operator (train)
- LRT – Light Rail Transit (tram, elevated metro)
- MRT – Mass Rapid Transit (metro)
- ERL – Express Rail Link (train)
Rapidly
The app shows different route options for the metro. It also includes LRT and MRT services. Additionally, it covers ERL and BRT connections in Malaysia. You can check nearby stations. You can also see current ticket prices, so planning is easier. Moreover, the app lets you plan routes between selected points. Therefore, getting around the city is more efficient.
KL Metro
The app includes route options for KTM, LRT, MRT, and ERL. Routes are listed by line or alphabetically, so navigation is easier. It allows fast searches within the rail network, and therefore helps with quick planning. Additionally, it offers a built in guide. However, you should expect many ads.

K.K.K.L. Express
The app allows you to buy tickets from the operator K.K.K.L. Travel & Tours. It offers routes within Malaysia. It also provides international connections between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. You can check available departures, and then buy tickets directly in the app. Therefore, the booking process is simple. The company operates as a trusted transport provider.
707 Inc
The app allows you to buy tickets for routes between Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Pahang, and Singapore. It covers a limited number of cities, because the operator runs only specific routes between these locations. You can check connection availability, and then buy tickets directly in the app.
Moovit
The app works in a similar way to Google Maps and shows all available transport options in the area. It allows you to plan trips from point A to point B, so navigation is simple. However, in Malaysia it does not always work properly. Additionally, some features are paid, and the free version contains many ads.

Food and Attractions
Tripadvisor
This is a great app with user reviews of attractions and food in Malaysia. It works especially well when you do not know where to go or what to eat nearby. The app allows filtering places by rating, cuisine type, and price range, so choosing is easier. Additionally, it includes recent user photos, and therefore you can assess a place before visiting.
Klook
This is a popular app in Asia for finding and booking nearby attractions. It offers a wide range of tickets and tours, so planning sightseeing in Malaysia is easier. The app has a clear category structure. It includes theme parks, attraction tickets, car rentals, food, outdoor and sports activities, and also accommodation. Thanks to this layout, it is easy to match offers to your plans. Therefore, Klook can be a good alternative to, or a useful addition to, GetYourGuide when organizing activities on the spot.
Tiqets
The app helps you find and buy tickets for nearby attractions. It is easy to use, so navigation is simple. It also allows you to skip ticket queues, and therefore saves time while sightseeing. It works as a good alternative to Klook and GetYourGuide, which is why it is worth having as a backup option. If tickets are not available in one app, Tiqets can be the third option.
Accommodation in Malaysia
Booking.com
Booking offers a wide database of hotels, hostels, guesthouses, and apartments. It works well as an alternative for comparing prices and availability with Agoda. The app allows filtering by price, location, ratings, and amenities, so searching is easier. Additionally, it lets you book a taxi, rent a car, and buy tickets for attractions.
Airbnb
The app allows you to rent rooms, apartments, and entire homes, mainly from private hosts. It is a good option if you want to save money on food. You can cook on your own during the trip. The booking process takes place directly in the app, so accommodation planning is simpler. In most cases, check in is self service, and therefore there is no direct contact with the owner on site.

Traveloka
The app is popular in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. It offers a wide database of accommodation options. It also allows you to book flights, attraction tickets, airport transfers, and car rentals. Prices are competitive compared to Agoda and Booking. The app is very easy to use, so trip planning is simpler.
Hostelworld
The service specializes in hostels and is ideal for budget and solo travelers. In Malaysia, it offers a wide selection of hostels, especially in major tourist cities. A big advantage is user reviews, which describe the atmosphere of each place. Thanks to this, it is easier to make a decision before booking.
Internet and eSIM in Malaysia
Hotlink eSIM
The local Malaysian telecom operator offers eSIM with data packages. The service also includes a phone number, so you can make calls. A prepaid SIM is available and is valid for 30 days, which works well for longer stays. Alternatively, you can choose a tourist package valid from 1 to 30 days, and therefore this option is convenient for travelers in Malaysia.
Maxis
Another local operator in Malaysia offers mobile internet and an eSIM service with the option to assign a phone number. The card must be purchased in the online store, and then the service needs to be activated. The app is not very intuitive, so the installation process can be more complicated compared to other solutions.
