Short history

The Church of Peace in Jawor, the largest wooden sacred building in the world, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. It was built in the second half of the 17th century as a result of the Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years’ War. Emperor Ferdinand III Habsburg, under pressure from Sweden, granted the Lutherans in Silesia the right to build three churches on its territory, in Głogów, Jawor, and Świdnica. The conditions for construction were strict – only temporary materials could be used, the churches had to be located outside the cities, they could not have towers or bells, they had to be completed within a year, and their costs were to be borne by the Protestants. Today, of the three churches, only two have survived – in Jawor and Świdnica, as the church in Głogów burned down in the 18th century.
