Borowa Peak, 853 m

Borowa is the highest peak of the Black Mountains and the entire Wałbrzyskie Mountains in the Central Sudetes. It stands at 853 meters above sea level. Recently, a beautiful observation tower has been erected at its summit.

Tourist Trails

Reaching the summit takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on your fitness level. Initially, I had planned to take the red trail starting from the Wałbrzych PKP Station, passing through Rozdroże Czarne, and continuing on the red trail to the very top. For the return, I considered descending via the black trail, also known as the “Path of Torment,” to the Koźla Pass, then switching to the yellow trail, which leads to the ruins of the Nowy Dwór Castle, finally ending the journey back at the Wałbrzych PKP Station. This is the most popular route.

However, due to the rapidly changing weather, I opted for the green trail starting from Ogrodowa in Jedlina-Zdrój, all the way to Ptasie Rozdroże. I then had the option of taking the blue trail to Rozdroże pod Borową and continuing along the red trail to the summit, or choosing the black trail, which has recently been added to the maps. A looming dark blue cloud convinced me to take the black trail, which turned out to be quite a challenge, even with good physical condition. I highly recommend choosing the first option from my dilemma—taking the blue and red trails up to the summit.

Jedlina-Zdrój, Ogrodowa – Green Trail – Ptasie Rozdroże – Black Trail – Borowa Summit, round trip is about 5.1 kilometers. It took me 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete the route at a very good pace. The trail is challenging, and I wouldn’t recommend it to beginners.

Borowa and the Viewing Point

Although Borowa is the highest peak in the Wałbrzyskie Mountains, it is not part of the Crown of Polish Mountains (Korona Gór Polskich), unlike Chełmiec. Why? Well, the story originates from a measurement error during the KGP (Crown of Polish Mountains) measurements. The gentlemen responsible for the measurements placed the devices on the tower on Chełmiec, adding a few extra meters to the peak… The error has not been corrected to this day, and Borowa has been included in the Diadem of Polish Mountains instead.

Since 2017, there has been a viewing tower on the summit of Borowa, which has attracted a significantly larger number of tourists. The description of the tower states:

“The viewing tower is a steel structure, bolted together, forming the shape of a single-shell hyperboloid with a hexadecagonal cross-section, made up of 32 pillars positioned at a 68-degree angle to the base.”

Tourist information at the summit of Borowa.

I didn’t quite grasp all of that either, so the tower is definitely something you need to see with your own eyes. The structure is truly impressive. There are 90 steps leading to the top, and it stands 16.5 meters tall. At the summit, there’s also a sheltered spot where you can catch your breath. And don’t forget the summit stamp in a metal box!

Here are the addresses of the parking spots I found:

  • Pokrzywianka, 58-330 Jedlina-Zdrój – Parking near Borowa
  • Ogrodowa 3, 58-330 Jedlina-Zdrój – Parking near Borowa
  • A smaller parking lot is located just past the main one on Ogrodowa, on the left-hand side.
