Palm House – The Pearl of Princess Daisy

The Palm House is a symbol of Jan Henryk XV’s love for his beautiful wife Maria Teresa Cornwallis, known as Daisy.

A Gift of Love

The Palm House was created at the initiative of the last member of the Hochberg family at Książ Castle, Jan Henryk XV, for his wife Maria Teresa Cornwallis, known at the time as Daisy, who loved flowers and exotic plants. This expression of great love still delights all who visit.

The construction of the Palm House was carried out on a grand scale. On an area of 1,900 square meters, a palm house, greenhouses, Japanese-style gardens, a rose garden, a vegetable and fruit garden, and an area for shrub cultivation were created. Seven railway wagons filled with solidified lava from Mount Etna were brought from Sicily to help create caves, waterfalls, and walls. After the completion of the construction, which cost around 7 million marks of the time, approximately 80 plant species were imported. Today, we can admire as many as 250 species of plants.

The greatest passion of Princess Daisy was the rose garden, where she cultivated beautiful snow-white roses, now known as the “Daisy” variety. It was thanks to her great love for plants that the Rose Terrace was created at Książ Castle, which is still open for visitors today.

A walk through the Palm House takes about 40-60 minutes. The temperature is quite high, so the most pleasant visit is during the winter season. Recently, a lemur enclosure has also been added, an extra attraction for children. After the walk, visitors can stop by the café to refresh themselves with a cold smoothie.
